P990i brings Symbian9.1, UIQ3.0, UMTS, Wi-Fi and autofocus to the P series. A QWERTY keyboard mounted behind the numeric flap complements stylus input.
Period and variants
Announced on10 October2005, P990 had a first-quarter2006 shipping plan. The August2006 review still identifies a preproduction unit; a Thai unboxing documents another handset used for a week. These events do not establish one worldwide first retail day.
The original user guide specifies up to60MB user storage, a supplied64MB Memory Stick PRO Duo and support up to8GB. Earlier announcement80MB/4GB figures remain dated. A May2007 factory P990 comparison separates64MB RAM,128MB flash and up to60MB user storage, distinct from the neighbouring P1’s128MB RAM.
UIQ3.0 is a new software environment requiring suitable application versions. WLAN is802.11b. FastPort is USB2.0-compliant but the factory specifies1.5/12Mbps rather than480Mbps. Two hands-on tests report1120mAh lithium-polymer batteries; the320×240/15fps recording result is explicitly an August sample observation, not a guarantee for every firmware.
