Overview

Xperia Z3 Compact combines a 4.6-inch display with Snapdragon 801, 2 GB RAM, a 20.7 MP camera and front stereo speakers. Glass/plastic construction, expandable flash and launch-versus-update details are recorded.

Period and variants

Announced on 3 September 2014, Xperia Z3 Compact combines flagship processing with a 4.6-inch, 129 g body. Sony plans an autumn rollout without establishing one worldwide first-sale day. D5803 and D5833 remain separate radio variants; full-size Z3 and Tablet Compact are different devices. Sony’s white paper and PhoneArena both specify 127 × 64.9 × 8.6 mm, so a conflicting aggregate 127.3 mm is not adopted.

Compact controls

A 720 × 1280 IPS TFT display uses TRILUMINOS. Glass front and rear panels surround a translucent plastic frame. Front stereo speakers, a round side power key, a dedicated camera shutter, native 3.5 mm jack and dock contacts define the hardware. Covered nanoSIM, card and USB access accompany 128 GB card support and an embedded 2600 mAh battery. Original IP65/IP68 claims require closed caps and specified fresh-water laboratory conditions; aged seals need separate assessment.

Launch and revisions

Snapdragon 801 MSM8974AC, quad-core 2.5 GHz, Adreno 330 and 2 GB RAM are corroborated by Sony and firsthand testing. The 16 GB flash is separate from RAM. Launch testing uses Android 4.4.4. The accessible original white paper is April2016 version5: Android6, Doze, VoLTE, Bluetooth4.1 and usable-space figures belong to that revision. The launch review specifies Bluetooth4.0. D5803/D5833 UMTS and LTE bands are listed separately, including D5833 TD-LTE40. PS4 Remote Play was originally scheduled for November.

Imaging and audio

The 20.7 MP camera uses a 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS sensor and 25 mm-equivalent G lens, with a 2.2 MP front camera. Reviewed Superior Auto defaults to 8 MP; full resolution is selected in Manual. SteadyShot/digital stabilization is not labelled optical stabilization. 4K is supported, but PhoneArena observes thermal shutdown around five minutes in its sample, without digital stabilization at that resolution. It is not a universal fixed recording limit. Hi-Res/DSEE HX, FM RDS, aptX and MHL3.0 complement the stereo speakers. Noise cancellation needs compatible headphones. The original rear photograph documents visibly cracked glass.
