Overview

W850i combines a slider, Walkman 2.0, UMTS video calls and Memory Stick PRO Duo expansion. Illuminated music keys, wireless stereo and a supplied headset define its 2006 music-phone focus.

Period and variants

W850 was announced on 18 May 2006 with a third-quarter rollout plan, and independent retail testing appeared in November. W850i is distinct from the similar W830i, which replaces UMTS with EDGE and omits the front video-call camera. Their network capabilities are not combined.

The original package includes 1GB Memory Stick PRO Duo. The announcement and later factory W850 comparison specify up to 4GB; this is not W880i’s M2 card. The later W880 whitepaper lists up to 64 MB W850 user-free space; a contemporary test reports about 60 MB. These accounts stay explicit rather than copying a generic 16 MB listing or labelling them RAM. Its 2MP main camera is fixed-focus, and VGA front camera serves UMTS video calls.

Two factory comparison tables and the physical test agree on 900 mAh BST-33 lithium-polymer, rather than a generic 950 mAh listing. Contemporary 116 g and later-table 118 g are qualified. The 3.5 mm connector is on the headset cord, not the phone; stereo headset/A2DP output does not establish dual handset speakers. TrackID depended on a remote identification service, described historically without promising present-day availability.
