Overview
Sony Ericsson’s 2007 W580i combines a Walkman slider, 2-inch QVGA screen, 2 MP camera, M2 storage and quad-band EDGE with shake-to-shuffle and fitness tools. FastPort, a replaceable 930 mAh battery and regional bundles follow maker documents and firsthand reviews.
Period and variants
The 2007 W580i belongs to Sony Ericsson’s Walkman slider generation. Original 26 March announcement coverage agrees with the white paper’s first-edition history; the Nordic maker release follows on 27 March. Q3 was a shipment plan. Quad-band GSM/EDGE W580i remains separate from simultaneously announced 3G Z750 and from W850, W910 and S500i.
The 99 × 47 × 14 mm, 94 g handset combines a 2-inch QVGA TFT, physical keypad and right-side FastPort. The proprietary connector handles charging, headset and USB cable rather than a native 3.5 mm jack or Micro-USB. Its 2 MP fixed-focus camera sits behind the sliding section, without flash. June 2008 R8A specifies 4x digital zoom and 15 fps 176 × 144/128 × 96 3GP video; the early GSMArena sample reports only 2.5x zoom at VGA, with exact firmware mapping unresolved.
Walkman 2.0, MegaBass, A2DP and RDS FM support music; the wired headset is the FM antenna. Holding Walkman and shaking shuffles tracks. Pedometer, distance and calorie tools do not establish satellite navigation. About 12 MB is user-free storage, with up to 4 GB M2 specified by the later maker document. Reviewed bundles differ: unlocked 512 MB, AT&T white 256 MB and black without a card. The 930 mAh BST-38 lithium-polymer pack is removable. CPU, RAM and total flash remain unverified; MIDP 2.0 is an application profile rather than a smartphone OS.
