Overview

Siemens’ 2003 SL55 combines a compact 79 g slider, 4096-colour screen, replaceable 500 mAh pack and tri-band GSM. Its IrDA, optional QuickPic camera and internal file manager are distinguished from integrated hardware and RAM.

Period and variants

The 2003 SL55 is a compact GSM slider: its upper screen section moves upward to expose a numeric keypad. Ruby/silver styling gives the rounded handset a distinctive appearance. The museum dates its announcement to 11 March around CeBIT; the original guide and May firsthand test establish the period without an exact worldwide first retail day. SL56 and the cordless Gigaset SL55 remain separate.

The guide specifies 81.6 × 44.5 × 21.9 mm, 79 g and a 500 mAh lithium-polymer pack; the contemporary review rounds the dimensions to 82 × 44 × 22 mm. Its 101 × 80 screen displays 4096 colours, unlike S55’s 256. A decorative rear metal insert does not establish an all-metal shell. The battery/rear cover detaches to expose the SIM. IrDA sits on the right, volume/recorder keys on the left and the Siemens system connector underneath.

QuickPic IQP-500 is an optional attached camera; VGA/QQVGA capture and its flash belong to that accessory. About 1.6 MB dynamic user space is distinct from RAM. Card-Explorer manages internal files rather than a removable memory card. Tri-band GSM/GPRS, MMS, IrDA and downloadable Java applications accompany the absence of Bluetooth. CPU, RAM, total flash and precise LCD subtype remain unverified.
