N8

Overview

N8 combines a 12MP Zeiss camera, xenon flash, AMOLED multitouch and HDMI output, with penta-band 3G and USB OTG in Nokia’s imaging flagship.

Period and variants

Nokia announced N8 on 27 April 2010 and confirmed shipments to preorder customers on 30 September; broader retail availability followed and varied by market. The operating system is recorded as launch Symbian^3, with later Anna and Belle updates kept separate.

Factory and hands-on tests confirm all five WCDMA bands in one N8, unlike the regional pairs of earlier touch models. RAM is 256MB, ROM 512MB and mass storage 16GB, with a separately specified approximately 135MB system file area. HDMI and composite AV television output require their corresponding accessories.

Launch recording is 720p at 25fps. The factory 30fps figure concerns decoding, while a 2011 camera update added 30fps recording and continuous autofocus. Xenon serves still photography; stereo recording microphones do not imply stereo loudspeakers. The 1200mAh BL-4D is not designed for casual user removal, although teardown demonstrates service replacement after opening the screwed-together housing.
