At a glance
The 8850’s metal exterior and sliding keypad cover distinguish Nokia’s premium design approach in 1999. Its core functions remain calls, SMS and infrared transfer over dual-band GSM.
Dates and versions
This is a 1999 product. A contemporary hands-on review describes market entry in October, but neither an exact announcement nor first retail day has been verified. The date field is therefore empty. Conflicting 1998 dates and incorrectly labelled 8890 manuals are not used.
Use and collecting
The record follows the NSM-2NX GSM 900/1800 version in Nokia’s manual; the GSM 900/1900 specification of the 8890 must not be substituted. A sliding cover protects the numeric keypad. The internal phonebook has 250 entries, with eight voice-dial tags and IrDA transfer for supported data.
Nokia’s accessory documentation identifies BLB-2 as a 650mAh lithium-ion battery. Smart Messaging operator services are not a full web browser. Conflicting pixel counts and launch dates remain unfilled until supported by direct evidence. Replacement batteries, covers and repair parts can also change a second-hand handset’s appearance or weight.
