Overview

Nokia’s 1998 GSM 900 5110 combines a Navi key, 84 × 48 monochrome display, Xpress-on covers and Snake. SIM contacts, proprietary accessories and replaceable battery options are documented separately.

Period and variants

Nokia’s original 1998 annual report places the 5110 and 5130 introduction in March 1998 and volume deliveries in May. This archive retains those months without inventing a day or adopting the conflicting 12 April date found online. The original 5110 is GSM 900; similar-looking 5130 and 5190 models use other bands.

Controls and contacts

An 84 × 48 monochrome graphical LCD works with a numeric keypad, context-sensitive Navi key, Clear and scroll keys. The service document identifies one display-memory bit per pixel; that buffer is not handset user storage. Contacts reside on the SIM, with up to 250 entries depending on the card. The 6110’s separate 50-entry internal phone book is a different feature. SMS allows 160 characters; period conversion to fax or email is a network service.

Covers, games and power

Xpress-on front covers are user-changeable. Snake, Memory and Logic accompany a calculator, currency conversion and alarm. The 5110 has no infrared; computer data uses optional Nokia Data Suite and appropriate connection hardware. A proprietary accessory connector serves a headset, while a separate socket handles charging. Removing the external rear battery exposes the SIM.

The March 1998 service list specifies 900 mAh BMS-2, BMS-2S, BMS-2V and BLS-2 packs, plus a 1500 mAh BLS-4 extended pack. NiMH and lithium-ion options remain separate. ITavisen’s standard-battery sample was claimed at 170 g and measured at 164 g; period endurance measurements depend on the sample and network. The second archive photograph shows the component side of a motherboard despite its original Side 1 filename; visible chip labels do not establish every production batch.
