Dates and versions
Announced on 18 March 1999. An exact first retail day has not been verified, so the date field is left empty. This record describes the original 1999 handset, rather than a later 4G model sharing its name.
Use and collecting
The original uses GSM 900/1800 and a Mini-SIM. Picture messages use the contemporary SMS mechanism, rather than modern MMS. Contacts are stored on the SIM; actual capacity depends on the card, with up to 250 entries supported by the manual. Rotation, Snake and Memory are built in, alongside a ringtone composer.
Nokia’s service-accessory document identifies the standard BML-3 as a 1250mAh nickel-metal hydride battery. Some secondary specification pages incorrectly call it lithium-ion. The 151g weight includes the standard battery; thickness varies by measurement position. Unverified CPU, RAM and precise pixel resolution are omitted.
