Overview

Motorola’s 2002 rotating-cover V70 uses a circular-looking window over a rectangular inverse LCD. Regional radios, removable batteries and accessory connections are checked against maker documents and contemporary firsthand reviews, separately from V80 and Aura.

Period and variants

V70 belongs to Motorola’s 2002 GSM design range, documented by its annual report and March investor presentation. The Mobile Phone Museum dates the announcement to 14 February, but an original launch release has not been recovered. No worldwide first retail day is inferred. V80 and Aura remain separate.

The cover rotates in the handset’s plane to expose numeric keys. A circular-looking window masks a rectangular 96 × 64 inverse LCD. The contemporary review identifies a plastic cover and anodized-aluminium rear; titanium-looking finish is not proof of titanium construction. July’s sample is listed at 94 × 38 × 18.3 mm and 83 g, whereas March’s review gives different measurements and under 80 g. The guide requires an open cover for calls, with a compatible-headset exception.

The Hong Kong sample is dual-band 900/1800 MHz. A separate 1900 MHz maker bullet does not make every handset tri-band or establish an 850 MHz variant. Reviewed 430 mAh and optional thicker 700 mAh packs remain distinct. Upper headset, bottom accessory/charger and an optional computer-side USB data kit have separate roles. FM comes from an optional headset accessory. The original CC BY 3.0 video frame shows the complete closed front.
