Overview
HTC Dream launched commercially as T-Mobile G1, pairing Android with a side-opening five-row keyboard, trackball and capacitive display.
Period and variants
G1 was announced on 23 September 2008. Deutsche Telekom’s contemporary report confirms US store and online sales from 22 October; the date describes that US rollout. Google corroborates the announcement dateline where the carrier page header differs.
Launch software is Android 1.0. Android 1.5 later adds an on-screen keyboard, native recording and stereo Bluetooth. The 192MB RAM and nominal 256MB flash are distinct, with operating-system space reserved. A successful 16GB card test does not establish every firmware’s maximum.
European Dream uses WCDMA 2100MHz; US AWS 1700/2100MHz is separately identified. HTC lists 117.7mm length and a 3.17-inch display, while the review uses 117mm and 3.2 inches. Audio uses ExtUSB without a separate 3.5mm socket.
