Overview
Bold 9700 keeps QWERTY and 3G in a smaller body, replacing the 9000 trackball with an optical trackpad and adding a 480 × 360 screen, autofocus camera and BlackBerry OS 5.0.
Period and variants
RIM announced 9700 on 21 October 2009 and planned carrier supply from November. The December hardware review confirms the period device without establishing every market’s first-sale day. An optical trackpad navigates the interface; this is distinct from later Bold Touch designs.
The announcement calls 256 MB Flash, and its supplied 2 GB card is separate removable storage. The 3.2 / 3.15 MP descriptions differ in rounding. Autofocus and video recording are supported. Card support is recorded as 16 GB at announcement, with 32 GB an expectation.
The two factory 3G frequency versions remain distinct. UMA calling needs a supporting carrier, and micro-USB replaces the 9000 mini-USB connector. Factory capacity and advertised endurance are different types of evidence.
BlackBerry retired legacy BBOS and BlackBerry 10 services on 4 January 2022. Historical messaging and connection features do not establish reliable operation today.
